Since the age of five, I have been taking things apart and putting them back together. My first experience building with wood was in kindergarten when my teacher gave me a saw and told me to cut a piece of wood for parent-teacher day. Back then, children were trusted with sharp tools! That is when I got the creative bug. I began making small projects, including jewelry boxes for my mother, and eventually received my first power tool at the age of 12. I believe all children have a creative side and should have the opportunity to discover it and express it.
Fortunately, my high school in Miami had a very extensive industrial arts department back in the early 70’s. That is where I met someone of great influence, James Pete. As my teacher and mentor, he took me under his wing and encouraged me to excel. His personal works of wood carvings and furniture were so impressive that he inspired me to pursue my passion of woodworking. By my senior year, I completed three projects: a veneered cherry box, a walnut coffee table, and a classically-designed credenza, which is still used in my home.
After high school, I completed a four-year carpenter apprentice program and eventually worked my way up to become job supervisor. In contrast to the large-scale projects, requests for custom furniture and specialty pieces, such as church pews, altars, and even acoustic speakers, allowed me to hone my skills.
In 1992 I made my first music stand for a friend who contracted cancer. I incorporated design elements from his beloved violin, which delighted him and lifted his spirits. Since his passing, the music stand has been cared for by his close friends, who display it next to their Steinway piano. That experience inspired me to create a line of unique, hand-crafted music stands. I continually visualize various textures, shapes, and designs from traditional to cutting-edge, for my future creations. By integrating form and function, I am able to create fine pieces that reflect consideration of the user as well as my passion for woodworking.
